Our Story

The Birth of Mahogany Mamas

A few months after giving birth to a little boy, June Williams Glenn, craved a supportive community of like-minded Black moms navigating the challenges and the joys of motherhood. Soonafter, she asked several moms who had also recently given birth if they would also find benefit from connecting with other new moms living in the Oakland Bay Area. In April 2023, they eagerly agreed and a mom tribe was born.

The newly formed mom tribe quickly began supporting each other virtually in a text group chat, gathering in-person hangouts and walking playdates around the Bay Area, meeting for brunch and scheduling weekly drop-in video calls to share resources and offering much needed support.

One mom, September Hargrove, a mom of two (the veteran in the group), encouraged June to expand because September believed other moms needed this community too. They transformed their playdates into planning sessions and September became her first mom advisor for the first Mahogany Mamas & Mimosas Brunch which launched in October 2023.

With September as her first mom advisor, June launched the only community group of its kind in the Bay Area. Mahogany Mamas celebrates moms for pouring into themselves, allows Black moms to embrace luxury and leisure and fosters opportunities for meaningful social connections. This is the answer to the modern mom’s prayers.
